We explained that she is a medical support dog, offered documentation, and were even willing to provide the on-call # of the physician that oversees my friend’s care.

We were informed that dogs are not allowed.

About halfway through the trail we are stopped by a very abrasive security guard who clearly has inadequate training in how to deal with people with medical issues/special needs. We excitedly reached the pumpkin path and were informed of what’s not permitted – smoking/vaping, flash photography, etc. We would have fully respected this policy and gone elsewhere, had it been clearly marked on a sign at the entrance or verbalized by the greeters, ticket sellers, ticket scanners, or any number of zoo staff that we initially interacted with (several of whom merely commented on how cute and well-behaved the dog is). Apparently the zoo’s policy is to allow service dogs (rightfully so!) but not legitimate support dogs, which is unfortunate for the people like my friend who would be unable to participate in the experience without the support of her dog, which is a medical tool for her. The dog is 10 lbs and she was carrying her all night in a pouch that she wears across her body (so the dog never touched the ground at the zoo and is and very well behaved, certified as a therapy dog, etc.). She has never had a problem bringing the dog anywhere, including restaurants, theaters, offices, flights, and other zoos.
